Mineit Sponsors UBC Mining Engineers

Mineit realizes that today’s increasingly complex industries require engineering education that not only includes excellence in classroom and laboratory curriculum, but also exposes students to real-world industries and problems so that they can apply their learning in the field. Hence, Mineit is proud to sponsor UBC’s ( University of British Columbia) mining engineering class of 2016 for a research trip to Chile in order to further develop relationships with the Chilean mining industry.

This year students will be visiting following five mines.

  • El Teniente – Codelco’s largest underground copper mine operation with over 3000 kilometers of drifts developed
  • Andina – open-pit and block cave copper mine operation owned Codelco; it is situated in the Andes mountains
  • Centinela – massive open-pit copper mine owned by Antofagasta; recently merged from two mining operations
  • Chuquicamata – second deepest open-pit copper mine in the world; it is next to a ghost town
  • Sierra Gorda – recently commissioned copper mine owned by KGHM; its water supply is brought from the coast through a 140 kilometer pipeline
